The German town of Soest is suffering in the winter of 1448. Cold and hunger plague the inhabitants. In these desperate times, full of famine and strife, the archbishop tries to recapture the city. But he is on the losing side. Furious, he decides to steal the city's most precious secrets....


Jörgen Haverland protects one of those precious secrets: the recipe for the miracle bread Pumpernickel, which helps the inhabitants through hard times. Determined to secure the recipe, Jörgen goes on the run. Armed with nothing more than his backpack containing the recipe and a loaf of bread, he sets off. In town, there are whispers of another great secret: a hidden exit. Will he manage to find it in time?
