In 1904, the famous Chilean poet Pablo Neruda was born. He soon discovered his passion for language and at the age of 16, his first book of poetry was published. Because writing did not bring in enough money, he had to change tack and became a diplomat.
He travelled all over the world for his work. In 1943, Neruda returned to Chile, where he gained increasing political status and became a member of the Chilean Communist Party. The fact that he was not easily swayed became clear when president González Videla called a miners' strike. Neruda was strongly opposed to this and he showed it! As a result, he immediately had to go into hiding.
