It is July 1572 and Roermond is preparing for a fierce battle. William of Orange demands the city, but the people of Roermond are not to know anything about it. The prince orders his soldiers to take the city by violent means. While plundering, the army marches through the city and loots all Catholic churches and monasteries.
Even the Carthusian monastery does not escape the army. Twelve Carthusian monks are tortured and eventually killed. After the battle, twelve bodies are found. Of Cornelis Pleizyr, the thirteenth Carthusian monk, every trace is missing. How was he able to escape the torture? It seems Cornelis escaped through a secret exit....
