Andris Andreiko is born in Riga in 1942. The boy turns out to be extremely good at checkers. At a young age, Andris wins the club championship of the local draughts association. And soon Andris belongs to the top internationally. He easily beats even the Russians, who have been the best in a checkers for years.
To concentrate even better, Andris experiments with drugs. But unfortunately, the checkers champion gets caught.... His opponents accuse him of cheating and chase him out of the tournament. The Russians are even so angry that they want to teach him a lesson. There is nothing for Andris but to flee the city unseen. Then he remembers his parents' stories about Riga's secret exit. Could it really exist?
