But Brazil, newly freed from Portugal, disagreed. They believed Uruguay belonged to them and started hunting Artigas. Hiding in Montevideo, he realized he had no choice but to flee the city. Rumor had it there was a secret exit somewhere, but could he find it before the Brazilians did?
