Late one evening in 1401, Klaus Störtebeker hurried across the square in front of Hamburg’s town hall. Only a short time earlier, he had been imprisoned, awaiting trial and a near-certain execution. The notorious pirate, who had been the terror of the North Sea for years, seemed to be facing his end… until he saw his chance and managed to escape.
While in captivity, Störtebeker heard an important rumor from a crew member. Somewhere in the city, there was said to be a secret place from which he could escape Hamburg. It was his only chance at freedom. But by now, the city was in an uproar. The guards had been alerted and were hot on his heels. Time was running out, and only through quick thinking and speed could he escape.
