Around 1828, William Hare made his money in Edinburgh by renting out Lodging House, a kind of apartment complex. But it was not a real fat pot. So when a tenant died with a debt of four pounds, Hare had his fill. This was just costing him money! He complained to William Burke, good friend, namesake, and partner in crime. Soon they agreed that more money needed to be made. But how?


The men flinched at nothing and decided to remove the tenant's lifeless body from the coffin and sell it. To avoid being caught, they filled the empty coffin with tree bark. Perfect, nothing more to do! Knox, a well-known professor, got wind of the two criminals' sinister plan and immediately offered 7 pounds for the corpse. Deal! Hare and Burke looked at each other glowering and thought the same thing: this is a golden business. In the months that followed, they sold more and more corpses. And not just of people who had died naturally ... Until a new tenant found a dead body under her bed and called the police. For Hare and Burke there was nothing else to do but flee. Word had been going around the criminal circuit for years that Edinburgh would have a secret exit. Just what they needed now!
