Late 15th century, 's-Hertogenbosch. Dirck Cock van Cleve is a simple foot messenger of the Illustrious Brotherhood of Our Blessed Lady. Or at least, he was. When he accidentally opens a few letters not intended for him, he uncovers dangerous secrets: the names of powerful brothers, suspicious payments, all signed by bailiff Jan van Erp. Dirck knows too much, and that makes him a target.
While fleeing, Dirck quickly frees a swan from the kitchen of the brotherhouse. Together with Pas Foie, he runs through the narrow alleys of Den Bosch. The city guard is hot on his heels, and there is only one chance left: the city’s secret exit. But almost no one knows where it is. Dirck has just two hours to escape…
