Ludwig III, born in Munich in 1845, had no ambition to ascend the throne. Why would he want to become King of Bavaria? He was much more interested in agriculture, transport and art. Yet, against his will, he had to take over the baton from his late father.
Governing was not in Ludwig III's blood, and during the First World War he tried to keep a low profile. This worked well, until the people revolted against the royal house and the elite. When Ludwig III realised that the communists wanted to depose and imprison him, he wanted to leave the city as soon as possible. But how? His court had once dropped something about the secret exit from Munich. He could make good use of it now!
