It is 9 December 1589, and in Lier Cathelyne van den Bulcke is brought to trial. Accused of witchcraft and denied a fair hearing, her fate seems sealed. Despite witnesses pleading her innocence, bailiff Willem Brant sends her towards the torture chamber. Fear and hysteria prevail over the truth.
But then chaos erupts. Clear-thinking citizens seize their moment and Cathelyne manages to escape. She just has no idea where to go. Rumours speak of a secret exit from the city. With the help of local citizens and only a few hours to spare, she must find it before her pursuers strike.
