In 1847, Harlingen was facing dire straits. The potato harvest had failed, food prices were skyrocketing, and more and more families were struggling to make ends meet. While the residents were starving, ships loaded with food lay in the harbor, ready to set sail for other destinations. Anger among the population grew by the day and eventually focused on one man: Mayor Jetze Rodenhuis.
